"Avery was established in 1868 when the Chicago, Burlington & QuincyRailway was put through and is 5-6 miles east of Albia. In the vicinity of Avery are the Chisholm Mines which are now about worked out."
"Hynes City lies 1 3/4 miles southeast of Avery. The locality is alsoknown as "Smoky Hollow." It was named after the superintendent of the mine, Faley Hynes. It had a population of 250-300 people.He was a farmer and a coal miner of Monroe County Iowa, {Keystone Mine} and was the son of John Edward Clark and Annie Matilda Reddington.

He married Clara Phillips ; daughter of James Matthew Phillips & Mary Elizabeth McDermott July 03, 1900. {my grandmother Anna Phillips Lanigan's sister}

He was the first child to be born; sibblings were John Wesley 1884, Rosa Myrtle 1886, Fred W. 1890 ,and his parents also raised Riley Clark Hudson the son of Neuman Hudson and Mary (Mame) Phillips.Riley was born 1896.

The remains of James E. CLARK miner for 37 years old who fell dead while running for a street car early yesterday morning in Des Moines will be brought here for burial tomorrow at 11:15 AM. The funeral will be held in the home of his wifes mother Mrs. Lizzie Philllips (NEE MCDERMOTT) at 457 South Williard Street. The remains will be accompanied by Mrs. Clark and three children remaining as survivers. Mr. Clark ran to catch the car at East Fourteenth street amd Grand Avenue and was seen to stagger and fall. He was scarcely breathing when companions reached his side. A few minutes later when the physicians arrived he was dead. He was employed at the Keystone mines.Reverand W.E. REAVES of the Christian Church will officiate the funeral. Internment will follow in Shaul Cemetery.

*His wife Clara married Robert Gandy Harlan and he is buried at Calvary Cemetery of Ottumwa. Marriage to Gandy was her second marriage.Gandy was baptised just a few days before his death by Father Walsh of St. Mary's Church.
