Little Tyke, an African Lioness, was attacked by her mother at birth at the Point Defiance Zoo in Tacoma. She was nursed back to health by George and Margaret Westbeau of Auburn, Washington, and lived with them in their home for the rest of her life. She refused to eat meat, living instead on a diet of cooked cereals, eggs, milk, and cod liver oil. She was featured in many news reels, magazines, newspapers, television shows and at least one movie. Unfortunately, she contracted a respiratory virus and died at age 9. Her owners George and Margaret Westbeau wrote a book about her titled, "Little Tyke, The True Story of a Gentle Vegetarian Lioness."
