Speer, Daniel N. Letter, 3 January 1863.Accession 45501. 3 pages..Library of Va.Letter, 3 January 1863, from Daniel N. Speer (1836-1893), Quartermaster's Department of Lawton's Brigade, near Port Royal, Virginia, to his father-in-law Dr. John Fletcher Moreland (1817-1878) in LaGrange, Georgia. Speer writes about the positions of various Confederate troops in the area, his wife's lodgings nearby, stolen Confederate military sacks, the death of Thomas B. Settle (1828-1862) at the Battle of Fredericksburg, the possibility of moving his family to Augusta, Georgia or Columbia, South Carolina, prices of gold and bank notes in Richmond, and he discusses his position as acting brigade quartermaster, items at his disposal, and what types of food and supplies he has recently purchased.
