Joseph R. Brown died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Frank Youmans, at Cassville, on Friday last after an illness of but a few weeks. He was familiarly known as "Squire" Brown, having served as Justice of the Peace for about 15 years. He was born July 5, 1836, and was almost 85 years of age. A veteran of the civil war, serving the full four years, he had seen action in 17 battles among them being Gettysburg, Bull Run, Yorktown and Spottsylvania. He was a man of wonderful memory and had made a remarkable study of the Bible, being able to recite long passages.
He came from sturdy stock and but a week before his death he related to his son-in-law, H.J. Woolly, of Lakewood, how his father, who was a school teacher, walked daily from Cassville to his school at Squankum.
Funeral services were held Monday at Cassville in charge of Charles A. Clayton, of Adelphia, the Rev. H.B. White, of Lakewood M.E. church, officiating.
He was a brother of Mrs. Emma Stephens, of Bradley Beach, Mrs. Sarah A. Storer, of Perrineville; Joshua Brown of Hammonton, and Jasper R. and George _ Brown, of Cassville. Besides these he leaves the following children, Mrs. Samuel Wooley, of Farmingdale; Mrs. Joseph Cole, of VanHiseville; Mrs. Frank Youmans, of Cassville; Mrs. H.J. Woolley, of Lakewood, and three sons; Wyckoff, William and Walter, all of Cassville.
