John Ellis Harker was born 22 Oct 1869 at Fostoria, OH. He was the son of Daniel Pocock Harker (26 Dec 1847–12 Oct 1907) and Louisa Hollinger Harker (1844–7 Jun 1915).

John went to Cambridge, Story County, Iowa when he was twenty-one years old. He met and later married Elizabeth Walden 29 Apr 1894 at Cambridge, Iowa.

John and Elizabeth came to Perley, Norman County, MN in 1904 with Elizabeth's parents. They lived with her parents for the first year east of Perley, after which they started farming for themselves.

John and Elizabeth were the parents of four children: Raymond Lewis 28 Sep 1894 – 2 May 1975 (Alta Florence Heifner 12 Sep 1899 – 22 Jul 1983), Willard Emerson 3 Sep 1897 – 20 Feb 1984 (Sadie Mathilde Reppen 8 May 1898 – 6 Apr 1989), Lillian Pearl 11 Jun 1899 – 26 Jun 1995 (Tosten O. "Tom" Finney 10 Dec 1884 – 13 Jun 1970) and Grace Beatrice 3 Sep 1901 – 4 May 1942.

John and Elizabeth also were foster parents to her nephew, Earl Walden. Earl came to them when he was about a year old. His mother had passed away and his father could not take care of an infant, so the John Harkers raised him as their son. Earl Walden was born 28 May 1909 at Cambridge, IA and died 8 Mar 1983 at Edmonds, WA. He married Clara Gustafson from Barnesville, MN.

John Harker continued farming until 1940 when he retired and he and Elizabeth moved into Perley Village. John E. Harker passed away 5 Dec 1944 at his home in Perley at the age of 75. Funeral services for him were held at the Bethania Lutheran Church, Perley, MN 8 Dec 1944. Pastor Thomas Anderson officiated at the service.
