Benjamin N. Spencer was born in Pennsylvania on April 30, 1806; He moved young to Ohio, and then moved to Porter county Indiana, in 1828, where he married his first wife; all of his children two sons and six daughters, were born in Indiana; moved to Minnesota in the fall of 1853, where he engaged in the lumbering business and agricultural pursuits - hence the town was named Spencer Brook in honor of the Judge; he finally settled down in Livonia, Sherburne county, where he resided up to the time of his death, March 17, 1881 . In early life Mr. Spencer worked at the carpentering and cabinet making trade and of late years followed farming exclusively, on his beautifully situated and extensive farm in Livonia. In politics, Mr. Spencer was an old time Democrat. He was twice elected to the legislature in Indiana, and was one of the bench judges in that state for nine years. Mr. Spencer was a jovial, social gentleman, and never more happy than when surrounded by his friends in his pleasant home. He was a man of decided ability and sterling character, and goes down to his grave at a ripe old age, beloved and respected by all who knew him.

About 1854, he came to Minnesota, and lived in St. Anthony for a time, after which he went to Isanti county, and was engaged in farming for three years. In 1864, he came to the farm in Livonia township, where he resided until his death, which occurred on the 17th of March, 1881. Mr. Spencer was highly respected by those who had the pleasure of his acquaintance. He filled the office of Judge of Probate of Sherburne county, for two terms. His wife was Mrs. Sarah J. Thompson, a native of Tompkins
county. New York, and a resident of Minnesota since 1849. She still resides on the old homestead.
