Benjamin N. Spencer was born in Pennsylvania on April 30, 1806; He moved young to Ohio, and then moved to Porter county Indiana, in 1828, where he married his first wife; all of his children two sons and six daughters, were born in Indiana; moved to Minnesota in the fall of 1853, where he engaged in the lumbering business and agricultural pursuits - hence the town was named Spencer Brook in honor of the Judge; he finally settled down in Livonia, Sherburne county, where he resided up to the time of his death, March 17, 1881 . In early life Mr. Spencer worked at the carpentering and cabinet making trade and of late years followed farming exclusively, on his beautifully situated and extensive farm in Livonia. In politics, Mr. Spencer was an old time Democrat. He was twice elected to the legislature in Indiana, and was one of the bench judges in that state for nine years.
