Inventor. Chemist. UGA Football coach. After attending John Hopkins, Herty was a chemisty instructor at the University of Georgia where he became the school's first football coach. In an attempt to save Southeastern trees that were unnecessarily being destroyed for their by products, Herty invented "the Naval Cup." The cup allowed the extraction of turpentine and other products from pine trees while allowing the trees to continue to mature. His research also proved high quality newsprint and other paper products could be made from Southern pine trees. His work created the Southern pulpwood industry which was an economic windfall to states in the South. Honors of note include the "Liberty Ship S. S. Charles H. Herty," the "Charles Holmes Herty Memorial Highway," "Herty Field" at University of Georgia, "Herty Hall" (science building) at the Georgia College & State University in Milledgeville, and "The Herty Foundation" are all named in his honor. "The Herty Medal" is one of chemistry's most distinguished awards. He was inducted into The Paper Industry International Hall of Fame.
