John Gower Norton was born in Ireland on October 3, 1842. He arrived in Massachusetts with his parents, John and Bridget Norton, between 1843 and 1846. By 1850 the family was living in Biddleford, York County, Maine, near the Massachusetts border. In time, the family moved to Illinois.

John Gower Norton married his first wife (name and date not known). She died a few years later. They had at least one son, Charlie, and a daughter (name unknown). Charlie went to Mexico during a gold rush and was not heard of again.

John G. Norton moved on to Missouri and then to Kansas in the 1880s. The children of his first wife were on their own by this time.

On January 1, 1885, John Gower Norton married his second wife, Margueritte Frances Best in Mound Township, Phillips County, Kansas. She was the daughter of Sarah Spencer and George Franklin Best of Pennsylvania. They had 13 Children.

John G. Norton was basically a farmer, but also helped drill water wells.

John Gower Norton died on October 24, 1915; Margueritte (Best) Norton died on December 2, 1922. Both are buried in the Iowa Union Cemetery, Phillips County, Kansas.

John Gower Norton was born in New Portland, Somerset, Maine. He was the son of Samuel H. Norton and Sarah Gower Norton, both of Portland, Somerset, Maine. He is my Great-Grandfather. He died in, or near, Phillipsburg, Phillips County, Kansas---where I was raised.
