Robert Fred Darrington, 67, of Declo, died Sunday, Oct. 30, 2011, at his home.
He was born April 18, 1944, in Burley, Idaho, the son of Clifford Henry and Ila Crossley Darrington. He lived his entire life in the Declo area, where he started from scratch and built a successful farming operation. He married Lella Jo Jacobs on June 4, 1965, in the Logan Utah LDS Temple. To this union were born two children, Paige and Shane. Bob and Jo were later divorced. He married Judith Ann Thomas Wickel on July 1, 1986.
Bob was born to be a farmer! The first words he spoke were car, truck and tractor. He loved his toys and in his childhood play, he staked out fields and pastures and built roads, tunnels and bridges. He learned to drive as soon as he could see over the steering wheel. He had his own paper route when he was 7 years old, and his strong work ethic expanded when his family moved out to the farm. He enjoyed his activity in Scouting and earned his Eagle Scout rank and Duty to God Award in 1960. He was an excellent student who graduated as salutatorian of the Declo High School Class of 1962. He studied agriculture at Utah State University for 3 years. During this time, he worked as a welder for Thiokol and spent his summers fighting fires for the BLM.
Burdell Curtis gave Bob a start in farming through a sharecropping agreement on his land. Bob worked extremely hard to raise good crops and did custom plowing and disking for other farmers until he was able to obtain his own ground. Bob was a perfectionist and it showed on his farms. He removed old fences and rock piles, installed irrigation systems and constantly made improvements. His fields were always clean and his rows straight. His tractors and equipment were maintained and kept in good repair. He enjoyed driving nice Ford pickups — which he also kept in sharp condition. He received numerous top grower awards from Ore-Ida for potatoes and Amalgamated for sugar beets. His experience was the epitome of the American dream — starting with seeds of desire and determination and building a legacy for his children, Paige and Shane. His honesty and integrity in his business dealings were exemplary.
Bob was a charter member of the Declo Lions Club, serving as president and in many other capacities. He enjoyed the many service projects and associations with other members. He also served as a volunteer fireman and a member of the board of directors for Southside Electric.
He loved his family and neighbors and was the first to step up and give service when needed — from snowplowing driveways to harvesting crops. He enjoyed snowmobiling, boating, hunting, fishing, camping and working.
He was charming and pleasant and loved by all. He enjoyed the company of his wife, Judy. He cared for her and influenced her children for good. He was a father figure to his step-granddaughter, Kylee, whom he loved very much. He had a close relationship with his children, Paige and Shane. He was supportive and proud of their accomplishments. His most treasured experience in this life was working the land alongside his son, Shane, whom he loved and respected not only as a son but as a friend.
Bob is survived by his wife, Judy of Declo; his children and grandchildren, Paige, Scott, Brae and Briana Beck of Burley, and Shane, Gina, Kyle and Hailey Darrington of Declo; his brother, Denton Darrington and his wife, Virgene of Declo; Judy's children and grandchildren, Kim and Kylee Wattenbarger of Declo, Tina, Mike, Jace and Myka Beckstead of Preston, and Dillon, Jennifer, Ben and McKenzie Wickel of Emmett.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 7, at the Declo LDS Stake Center, 213 W. Main St. in Declo, with Bishop Steve Durfee officiating. Burial will be in the Declo Cemetery.
