Henry Patrick SHACKELFORD - Family Bible shows his birth name as Patrick Henry Shackelford; however, he was known as Henry and that probably led to the reversal of first and middle names.

11 Jun 1861, he enlisted in the C.S.A. - 3rd Corporal, Co. A, 19th Regiment, Georgia Infantry at Atlanta, Georgia - later promoted to Full Regimental Musician.

20 Feb 1864, he survived the Battle of Olustee (Ocean Pond), East of Lake City, Baker County, Florida. After the battle, he wrote a letter to his mother that was published in the "Atlanta Intelligencer" on 02 May 1864.

From "The Shackelford Family Chronicles" - "Henry Patrick Shackelford wrote that his quarters in a Confederate Army camp were not laid with `pearl or gold but with wheat straw 16 inches deep' and that `our worthy sutler [a civilian provisioner to an army post often with a shop on the post] returned from Virginia yesterday. He brought sugar, coffee, pepper, writing pager, envelopes, etc. Vol [Volney Dunning] and I bought $300.00 worth of sugar and coffee.' "

01 May 1865, as a POW, he was paroled at Greensboro, North Carolina according to 26 Apr 1865 terms.

29 Jul 1869, married Jennie Spring EDWARDS in Oglethorpe Co., GA.
