Allen Eugene Hancock, former resident of the Dove Creek CO area, joined his Lord Jesus Christ, on Thursday, May 20, 2004 at Surprise AZ. He was 81 years old.
Allen, the third child of ten, was born to William Oscar and Mary Ohnick Hancock on April 22, 1923 on the ranch of his grandfather Ohnick, five miles west of Boise City OK.
The Hancock family lived on a 320 acre homestead in Baca County CO until Allen was fourteen years of age. At that time neighbors told them about the fertile soil in the Dove Creek area of Colorado. They moved west, living a short time in Cortez, then homesteading and buying land in the Dove Creek area.
The Hancock children attended Dolores County High School, the boys playing basketball and baseball. The baseball team the Hancock boys' played on was well known throughout the area for their playing.
After graduation, Allen and his dad worked on a construction project near the uranium mill at Monticello UT. During this period Allan met a young lady, Eileen Hixson, who would later become his wife.
In 1941, World War II, Allen joined the US Navy. His assignment was on the battleship USS New Mexico, as a Mechanist I Mate.
The USS New Mwxico was part of the 7th. fleet, fighting at the Gilbert Islands, Marshall Islands, Marianas, Sipan and Guam, Guadalcanal and Solomon Islands, Philippine Islands, and Okinawa. Allen was proud that the sailors on the USS New Mexico fired more rounds of ammunition and accumulated more miles than any other battleship in their fleet.
Following the war, Allen returned to marry his sweetheart, Eileen Hixson. The wedding was in Aztec NM on December 18, 1945. To this union was born four children; Janice Eileen, Mary Arveta, David Allen, and Leah Kaye. He mined uranium, farmed his land, owned a welding shop, as well as a certified welder for Nelsons Inc. Allen loved his home and working in his yard in Dove Creek. In the last five years he equally enjoyed his Arizona retirement home, learning about and working with desert flora and watching the quail feed from the seeds he put into the feeder. He enjoyed trips to the mountains and desert alike, was an avid rock hound and collector, liked paying and watching baseball, was a member of the Gideon Ministries, and most of all, loved being with his family.
In 1950 Allen accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior. His life was a testament of his HOPE in Christ, CHARITY to those around him, FAITH in the promise of eternal life with Jesus (I Corth. 13:13).
In August 2001, Allen was diagnosed with Myleodisplasia (a bone marrow disorder). during the three years of countless test and treatment, his loving kindness and devotion to Christ greatly impacted all that came in contact with him.
Allen was a strong and gentle man, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many. He will be missed by all.
Preceding him in death are his Father and Mother: William O and Mary Hancock; four brothers; Grover Hancock of Colorado Springs CO, Wilbert Hancock of Dove Creek CO, Ivan Hancock of Peoria AZ and Robert Hancock of Wickenberg AZ; two sisters: Gladys Hancock and Verna Hancock.
Burial was in the Cortez Cemetery.
