Eliza Moore Chinn was the daughter of Richard Henry Chinn and Betsy Holmes. She married James McHatton in 1820. She lived in New Orleans as a girl and during the Civil War ended up first in Mexico and later in Cuba. James McHatton died in 1872 and in 1873, she married Dwight Ripley. He died in 1907.

She was the author of "Social Life in Old New Orleans."
