Mary Soerby, Aged Resident Taken By Death
Final Rites For Well Known Woman To Be Held Wednesday.

Infirmities of old age are resulted in the death of Mrs. Mary Sowerby, Aged 88, a resident of this city and vicinity for about 80 years, this morning at 5:25 o'clock at her home, 111 East Stanton Street. She had been in failing health for some time.
Funeral services will be held, Wednesday, definites arrangements pending the arrival of relatives. Interment will be in the Riverview Cemetery.
The daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Alexander, pioneer residents of Streator, she was born in England, January 18, 1850. She came to the United States with her parents when she was a small child, the family residing in Pennsylvania for a short time. Coming west, they settled at Popes Creek near Phillips Cemetery, south of the city, long before the founding of Streator.
The decedent was married to Resse Davis in Streator, 66 years ago, her husband preceeding her in death. Two sons and a daughter were born to their union, the latter of whom died in infancy. A second marriage to Thomas Sowerby took place 35 years ago. He also preceeded her in death.
Mrs. Sowerby is well known in this city where she conducted a grocery store at 111 E. Stanton Street; for more than 30 years. For the past several years her son George Davis has managed the store. The aged woman was a close friend of Rev. E.W. Smith, pastor of the Park Presbyterian Church, who gleaned much of the early history of the church through her keen memory. In recent years she found a great deal of pleasure in reminiscing, delighting in telling others of her early life here. During her long life she has seen many changes take place in Streator, watching it grow from a tiny villiage known as Hardscrabble to the fine city it is today.
Surviving are her two sons, George and Robert Davis, of this city, a grandchild and a brother Dr. Elias Alexander of Royal, Nebraska.
