Georgia Governor. An educator who rose to the post of Georgia Assistant State Superintendent of Schools, he was elected in 1946 as Lieutenant Governor of the state on the Democratic ticket with Eugene Talmadge. However, Governor-elect Talmadge died shortly before he could take office, and Melvin E. Thompson assumed the office in March 1947. He served until November 1948, and his tenure was marked by the purchase of Jekyll Island by the state for a year-around resort. He was unsuccessful in a bid for re-election and in subsequent runs for the office in 1950 and 1954.
