Mrs. Hughes was born July 26, 1927 in Italy to the late Esther (Harris) and Rual Johns, and died Sunday, October 30, 2011 in a local hospital.
Mrs. Hughes worked at Candy Royal Day Care in Lufkin in the mid 1970s. She resided in the Dallas area for many years and was the manager of a Double Tree Hotel Gift Shop. Mrs. Hughes was a member of the Christian City Church in Rowlett. She and her husband returned to Lufkin in 2007.
Survivors include her husband of 66 years, Vernon Henry Hughes of Lufkin; son and daughter-in-law, Jack and Susan Hughes of Lavon; daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Gary Teer of New Braunfels and Pam and Billy Fitzgerald of Lufkin; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brother and sister-in-law, Herman and Betty Johns of Spring; sister, Ila Paul of Jemison, Alabama; and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hughes was preceded in death by an infant son, Larry Wayne Hughes; and four siblings, including her twin sister, Winna Faye Johns.
