First sheriff of Motley County, Texas. He was elected in 1891 and again in 1892

Shortly after becoming sheriff, he was challenged at the courthouse by Jeff Davis Boone, a former Matador Ranch cowboy, and bully with whom he had history. A shootout ensued and both men were wounded. Boone later died from his wounds.

In 1893 he was indicted for embezzling couty funds and was replaced with a new sheriff, George_W._Cook.

His embezzlement trial was moved to Baylor County. Sheriff Cook went to Seymour to testify against him. Beckham was waiting and shot him down. He died the next day.

Having turned outlaw, he went to Indian Territory and began robbing and killing.

Beckham was corned and killed in Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) by a posse led by Texas Ranger Sgt. W.J.L._Sullivan.
