Alvin Lucas "Al" Tholen of Grinnell passed away on July 29, 2009 at the age of 87. He was born on December 14, 1921 at home in rural Gove County to Theodore and Margaret (Berens) Tholen.

He grew up on a farm west of Grinnell and graduated from Grinnell High School in 1941. He helped his father on the farm. On August 17, 1942 he was drafted in the US Army Air Force where he served three years, four months and eight days. Alvin then returned to Grinnell and on September 2, 1952 he married Theresa J. (Wolf) Tholen. To this union one child was born: Denise.

Alvin then began his lifelong career and hobby being a carpenter. He and his brother Leslie built many homes together, then in 1974 his nephew Greg Tholen joined Alvin and together they built many homes in the area. Alvin loved woodworking. For his family he built dining tables, chairs, dressers, and in each piece of furniture he always added a letter that was sealed and not to be opened until his death. At the age of 80 he began building a beautiful set of cabinets for his daughter. Together with his son-in-law Bernie Wolf and his grandchildren Ronnie and Wade the cabinets were completed. At the age of 86 he was reacognized for building the president's chairs for the Oakley and Angelus parishes.

Alvin loved baseball, playing cards, and visiting with all the people at the VFW especially during Stag and Stagette. He and his wife attended many Air Depot reunions during the years. He enjoyed visiting with his army buddies and touring many military bases.

His wife, Theresa; five brothers: Louis, Leslie, Leonard, Alphonse, and Charles; seven sisters: Elanor Scheck, Clara Gibson, Gertrude Duncanson, Sr. Theodosia Tholen, Esther Tholen, Leota Mae Tholen, and Lila Faye Tholen, precedes Alvin in death.

He is survived by his daughter Denise Wolf and husband Bernie of Grainfield. Two grandsons, Ronald Wolf of Grinnell and Wade Wolf of Hays, and a brother Lawrence Tholen and wife Agnes of Grinnell.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 am Sundday, Augst 1, 2009 at Immaculate Conception Church, Grinnell. Fr. James M. Thomas and Fr. Michael Elan., CMI officiating. Alvin was buried in the Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Grinnell with military honors by Wheatland VFW Post 2864, Grinnell.

He will be forever in our hearts, Love Always.
