FORMER SHERIFF OF ONTARIO COUNTY DIES AT HIS VICTOR HOME

William Bushnell Osborne, Descendant of Pioneer Family, Was for Many Years a Public Official and Prominent Citizen

William Bushnell Osborne, a former sheriff of Ontario County and for many years prominent in the affairs of the county and his home township of Victor, passed away at the Osborne homestead on Maple avenue in Victor village, Saturday evening, April 11th.

Mr. Osborne had been in poor health for more than a year and had undergone several operations but was about his home during even the last day of his life. He had returned, April 7th, from the Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, where every effort had been made to restore him to health.

Mr. Osborne was born in Victor, October 26, 1852, the eldest child of David Henry Osborne, who came from Columbia County, NY, to Victor by stage coach in 1835, and Lovina Amelia Bushnell Osborne. After attending the Victor school and Canandaigua Academy, he assisted his father in the cultivation of the homestead farm in Victor, which has been his lifelong home with the exception of three years when he lived in Canandaigua, following his election as sheriff in the fall of 1894. He was supervisor of Victor for two terms, served upon the Victor Board of Education for many years and was also for many years a trustee of the First Presbyterian church of Victor. He was always a staunch Republican and in addition to his elective offices he served upon various committees. Always an enthusiastic agriculturist, he increased his land holdings, years ago, by the purchase of a farm of 90 acres, north west of Victor village, and while health permitted he gave his personal attention to his farm properties. He was a friendly personality and has been missed in public and social gatherings since illness fell upon him.

In Rochester, January 5, 1881, Mr. Osborne was married to Miss Laura McDonald, daughter of Angus McDonald, a prominent Rochester attorney. Besides his widow, he is survived by two sons and two daughters, David Henry, an electrical engineer with the Porcelain Insulator Corporation of Lima, N. Y., William Bushnell of the Division of Forestry of the United States Government, whose headquarters are in Portland, Ore., Miss Elizabeth McDonald Osborne of New York City and Mrs. John Knapp Hill of Victor. A daughter, Cora Lavinia, died in 1891 in her third year. The other surviving relatives are two sisters, Miss Cora B. Osborne and Mrs. Mark T. Powell, both of Victor, and six grandchildren, Wolcott and Nancy Osborne of Lima, Harriet and William Osborne of Portland, John and Betsey Hill of Victor.

Funeral services were held at the homestead at 3 o'clock, Tuesday afternoon, the Rev. Frank W. Hill of Rochester officiating. Burial was made in Boughton Hill cemetery.
