Marie S. Carabajal, 89, a lifelong resident of New Mexico, died Friday, March 3, 2006. She was born February 8, 1917, to Juan Cruz Sanchez and Rita (Romero) Sanchez, in Arroyo Colorado, near Manzano, NM. Marie is predeced in death by her parents, her husband, Albert J. Carabajal; and siblings Arturo Sanchez, Alfred Sanchez, Augustine Sanchez, Arthur Sanchez, Robert Sanchez, Carmen Tafoya, and Priscilla Vigil. Mrs. Carabajal is survived by her daughter, Rita C. Apodaca and husband, Augustine; son, Albert and wife Michelle; granddaughter Lisa Roberts and husband, David of Seattle, WA; grandson, Aaron A. Apodaca of Seattle, WA; and great-granddaughter, Abby Marie Roberts, of Seattle, WA. She is also survived by a brother, Manuel Sanchez of Estancia, NM; and two sisters-in-law, Solia Carabajal of Albuquerque and Frances Sanchez of Ft. Collins, CO. Her belief in hard work, the importance of education, and her compassion for others guided Marie throughout her life. She and her siblings graduated from Estancia High School. Marie began her employment during high school working in her father's grocery store, doing clerical work for NYA programs, and clerking in the local department store on weekends and summers. Following high school graduation, she worked at several places including the US Post Office, the Estancia Lumber Company, and the local theatre. In 1949, she began working for the Torrance County Health Department, transferring in 1953 (when she and her family moved to Albuquerque) to the Bernalillo County Health Department, and retiring after 30 years of service. In Estancia, Mrs. Carabajal belonged to the St. Peter and Paul Church choir and taught catechism classes. She also belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary. In Albuquerque, she was a member of Public Employee Retirement Association, UNM Town Club Mothers Group, and Highland Senior Center. She traveled extensively within the 50 states, as well as abroad.
