Morton Minot George, 81, of Concord, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005.

Morton was born in Concord, the son of Robert and Elizabeth (Farrand) George. He was a 1941 graduate of Concord High School and graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., in 1947 and from Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, Pa., in 1950. He served as a lieutenant junior grade on the aircraft carrier USS Lexington CV-16 from 1941 to 1946.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Norma (Badger) George; four children, Douglas George and his wife, Caroline, of Dover, Elizabeth Richardson and her husband, Thomas, of Durham, Jennifer George of Gonic, and Sarah Malinowski and her husband, Thomas, of Essex, Vt.; six grandchildren, Matthew and Andrew George, Ellen and Martha Richardson, and Devin and Seth Malinowski; and a sister, Patricia Peterson of Balston Spa, N.Y.

A sister, Sally Owen of Camden, Maine, predeceased him.

Morton was on many local boards of trustee and directorships, including Merrimack County Savings Bank, Phenix Mutual Fire Insurance Co., Bancroft Industries, Capital Region Healthcare and Concord Hospital. He was a member and volunteer with many organizations such as Concord Hospital, Rotary, Ward Ten checklist supervisor, Junior Chamber of Commerce, Boy Scouts, Concord's bicentennial celebration and Yacht Club. He devoted many years to Canterbury Shaker Village and started up their working print shop by locating machinery, training volunteers and running the printing equipment.

He was a longtime member of St. Paul's Church, serving on several committees over the years. When he moved to East Concord, he became a warden of Grace Episcopal Church. Later, he returned to St. Paul's as vestry member, head usher and in other various capacities.

Morton joined the firm of Evans Printing Company after college, a family business that began in 1879 and sold in 1981. He loved the outdoors, especially fishing, hunting, hiking and skiing, but his passion was sailing in the Atlantic Ocean on his 36' yawl.

Services will be held Feb. 8 at 10 a.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 21 Centre St., Concord.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the New Hampshire Veterans Cemetery Association Inc. P.O. Box 626, Concord 03302.

Burial will be held in a private family ceremony at a later date in New Hampshire Veteran's Cemetery.
