Medina County Gazette 8/29/1924 p. 3
Sylvester Pitts Shaw, the son of Sylvester and Harriet Parsons Shaw, was born in Bristol, New York, August 25, 1831, and died in Bath, Ohio, August 18, 1924, at the age of 92 years, 11 months, and 24 days.
In the fall of 1832 he with his parents and one older sister, Cordelia, journeyed for 18 days from their home in New York state , over the rough, unbroken country in an oxcart, drawn by a yoke of oxen to the state of Ohio, locating on the farm where his youngest and only surviving brother, Constant Shaw, now resides. It was amidst the surroundings of nature in its wildest form that he was reared to manhood thereby learning the lesson of honest labor and its reward.
On March 23, 1856, he was united in marriage to Sarah Rhoda Moody, and moved into a log cabin on the farm where he lived the remainder of his life. To this union were born four children, Gilson, Hattie, Durward, and Bertha, all of whom survive as well as 12 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren.
His wife preceded him to their Eternal Home 22 years ago, during which time he has been so kindly and lovingly cared for by his daughters, Hattie and family in his old home of so many years.
The passing of S. P. Shaw from among us, undoubtedly effects all much the same, causing us to pause for a time, to think back over the years we each have lived and of the wonderful changes which have now taken place in our span of life and to realize that few indeed are privileged to have been so wonderfully blessed with the great opportunity of viewing the marvelous transformations that man has performed as has our departing friend and relative.
Lacking but one week of being 93 years old, the very unusual aspect appeals to many of us, that of his having lived on the same road, in but two different locations for over 90 years a remarkable fact as now viewed in this day of restlessness and constant changing.
His has been an active, industrious life long past the allotted three score years and ten, with unusually good health through it all.
Having been deprived of his hearing for many years has not seemed to take away the sunshine in his life, for among the many things he particularly enjoyed in his later life was fashioning of little toys of various kinds with his own hands and his keenest delight seemed to be in presenting these to any little boy or girl whom he saw or heard about in the community.
His was not a disposition of many words, but a little incident occurring shortly before his last sickness is plain evidence of the appreciation that was in his heart for the care that had been given him these many years.
This came about in the form of a request that his daughter, Hattie, in place of purchasing expensive flowers make for him a sheaf of whet as her last tribute.
A tribute which no doubt meant to him, a symbol of love and care that had been his in the spot dearest to him his Home Sweet Home.
Funeral services were held August 20 at the home conducted by Rev. C. H. Searles, with burial at Shaw cemetery.
