GEORGE P. SHAFFER DIES AT HOME

One of the best known residents of this City passed away Monday afternoon

George P. Shaffer a resident of Lock Haven for 59 years and one of its best liked and highly respected citizens died at 1:30 o'clock Monday afternoon at the Lock Haven hospital aged 82 years. Since the death of his wife, sixteen years ago he had visited with his children and other relatives in this state and in the west, but had spent the greater part of the time in this city. Last winter he lived with his daughter Mrs W.P. Peck at Jeannette Pa. following a visit with relatives in Chicago, Minnesota and returned to Lock Haven in June. Six weeks ago he was stricken with heart trouble and entered the hospital where he was given every care and attention. His vitality gradually ebbed away and the passing came calmly and peacefully at the hour stated. George P. Shaffer was a son of the late Peter and Anna Shaffer and was born on a farm near Port Trevorton Snyder County Pa. March 24, 1836. At the age of six years he moved with his parents to Northumberland, where he attended public school and where the family resided for a number of years. In 1859 he he came to Lock Haven while the city was in its infancy. In 1860 he was married to Miss Annetta Winter of Center County Pa. This union was blessed with eleven children all of whom are living as follows I. L. Shaffer Chicago Ill. J Fred Shaffer Sioux Falls South Dakota, G. Frank Shaffer Moltne Ill, S.W. Shaffer New N.J. Mrs W.P. Peck Jeanette Pa. Mrs. Jacob W. Mader this city and Mrs. G, E. Lamm Williamsport Pa. There are nine grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren. He is also survived by four sisters Mrs. Barbara E. Scott of Philadelphia now visiting at the home of her daughter Mrs. B.F. Pietcher in this city Mrs. R.M. Painter of this city Mrs W. G. Barry of Wyoming Delware and Mrs. James Critton of Madison Wis. and by one brother S. J. Shaffer of Jershey Shore.

In 1885 Mr. Shaffer entered the fire and life insurance office of C.M. O'Conner which position he held untill 1890 when he was elected by a flattering majority to the office of city treasurer of Lock Haven for two terms of two years each after which he continued the insurance business until five years ago whe he retired from active life. Politically Mr. Shaffer was a Democrat and in former years had been active in politics. He had been a life long member of the English Lutheran church and was the last surviving charter member of the denomination in this city. He had also been prominently identified with the Odd Fellows and the Knights of Pythias, Having been one of the oganizers of Odd Fellowship in Lock Haven and was a member of Great Island lodge at the time of his death. He had attended meeting of both organizations just prior to his illness.

Sunset funeral services will be conducted from the home of Jacob W. Mader 753 Bellefonte avenue at 6 o'clock. Interment will be made in the family burial plot in Highland cemetery.
