The St. Louis Post - May 18, 2010
Deceased Name: August J. 'Gus' Lombardo

Longtime restaurateur of Lombardo 's fame who started working for his father in 1934

August J. "Gus" Lombardo, who spent his life offering traditional Italian dishes at his family's restaurants in the St. Louis area, died Saturday (May 15, 2010) of natural causes at St. John's Mercy Skilled Nursing Center in Town and Country. He was 94.

Mr. Lombardo grew up in St. Louis and graduated from Central High School, his brother Carmen Lombardo said.

In 1934, he started working for his father, Angelo Lombardo Sr., who ran a produce stand at Riverview Boulevard and West Florissant Avenue and built a small family restaurant there.

Mr. Lombardo joined the Marines in 1942 and fought in World War II. After being wounded in battle in Guam, he returned to work at his father's restaurant in north St. Louis.

In 1965, Mr. Lombardo and two brothers took over their father's business and erected a new building for the family restaurant. He remained active with the business until 1993, when Lombardo's moved to a new building near the Drury Inn across from Lambert-St. Louis International Airport. His nephews later added Lombardo's Trattoria, 201 South 20th Street, and Carmine's Steakhouse, 200 South Fourth Street.

"His biggest ambition was working in the restaurant all the time," said Carmen Lombardo. "It was like a second home for him."

Mr. Lombardo never married.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Buchholz Mortuaries, 1645 Redman Avenue, St. Louis County, followed by a memorial service at the funeral home. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.

Besides Carmen Lombardo, survivors include another brother, Angelo Lombardo Jr. A sister, Lee Schlichting, and a brother, Tom Lombardo, died earlier
