Mary ELLEN Crysler, UE, first generation descendant of a United Empire Loyalist family which, during the American Revolution, had remained loyal to the Crown of Britain. The Loyalists -- most of whom removed to British lands in Eastern and Upper Canada -- and their descendants, are distinguished by UE (Unity of Empire) being appended to their names.

On November 11, 1813, a fierce and decisive battle was fought on the fields of Ellen's father's farm along the banks of the St Lawrence River in Upper Canada. This engagement between British troops and the invading American forces, proved to be one of the most important battles of the War of 1812-1814, and virtually ended America's attempt to conquer Upper Canada. History has since written much about this "Battle of Crysler's Farm"

Ellen Crysler was daughter and 9th child of Lt Colonel John Crysler UE, and Nancy Finkle, John's third wife

Mary Ellen Crysler married William Oliver Buchanan in Williamsburg Township, Dundas County, Ontario on October 22, 1845

There were 9 children of the marriage - 2 girls and 7 boys

Ellen died less than a year after her husband, at the age of 80 years (although the Parish entry for her funeral records she was aged 78 years). The Reverend G Osborne Troop conducted her funeral at Saint Mark's Episcopal (Anglican) Church in Montreal, Quebec, on September 5, 1905
