Scientist-zoologist, immunologist, an evolutionist. After graduating from the department of the Natural sciences of St. Petersburg University, he held an internship at the University of Heidelberg, the Naples Zoological Station (1897-1899), at the Pasteur Institute in Paris (1899-1902). Upon receiving his master's degree, he began work at the Institute of Experimental Medicine. His first research interests included the study of intracellular digestion in the lower animals (sea urchins, ascarids, ciliates). The revolution of 1917 made him to emigrate to France, where he continued his scientific career. During his lifetime he published over 250 papers in Russian and Western European languages. He took an active part in the Russian emigre organizations. At the 1st Congress of the Russian National Association in Paris, 1921, he was a member of the Election Commission of the Congress, together with I.A. Bunin, Prince Dolgorukov, V.D. Nabokov and A.I. Kuprin. In 1922-1923 he served as the deputy chairman of the Board of Russian People's University, which played an important role in the socio-cultural life of exiled community. He died in a mental hospital in Meudon.
