Walter "Sonny" Schwartz, 65, of Winfield, died Tuesday, May 17, 1988, at his home.

Born July 1, 1922, in Winfield, he was the son of Charles and Laura Craig Schwartz. He married Frances Broeker December 31, 1941, at Kahoka, Missouri.

He had attended Winfield schools and was a medic in the Army during World War II, serving in the Philippines. He farmed and worked for various implement dealers in the Winfield area. He and his wife operated Fran's Cafe in Winfield for over 15 years. At the time of his death, he was employed at the Wal-Mart Discount Store in Mount Pleasant.

He was a member of the Winfield First Presbyterian Church, Good Faith Masonic Lodge and the Winfield American Legion. He was a life member and past district commander of the Winfield VFW He was a former mayor of Winfield.

Surviving are his wife; four daughters, Mrs. Kay Timmerman, Mount Union, Mrs. Carol Owens, Waterloo, Mrs. Linda Bunker and Mrs. Wanda McCauley, both of Mesa, Arizona; one sister, Mrs. Esther Sears, Winfield; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A Masonic Service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Honts Funeral Home, Winfield. Family visitation will follow.

The service for Mr. Schwartz will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church, Winfield, with the Reverend James Edwards officiating. Burial with military rites by the Winfield American Legion and VFW. Posts will be in the Winfield-Scott Township Cemetery.
