Rufus L. "Red'' Bond Jr., 89, of Little Swan Lake, Avon, died at 6:50 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 26, 2001 at the Blessing Hospital, Quincy.

He was born July 18, 1911 in Gary, Ind., the son of Rufus L. and Stella M. Warner Bond Sr.

He married Lovenia "Lovi'' Conard on April 7, 1946 in Monmouth. She survives. Other survivors include two sons, Robert C. Bond, Phoenix, Ariz. and William L. Bond, Kirkwood; one daughter, Elizabeth A. (Rod) Grusy, Elizabethtown, Ky.; two sisters, Miss Florence Bond, Hammond, Ind. and Mary (David) Sinclair, San Diego, Calif.; sisters-in-law, Mary Bond, Abingdon and Elizabeth Bond, San Antonio, Texas; three cousins, James Bond Stockdale, Coronado, Calif., George Bond, Pasadena, Calif.and William H. Bond, Williston, Vt.; nieces and nephews; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He grew up in Hamilton, Ill., where he attended grade school. His family moved to Abingdon in 1925 where he graduated from High School in 1929. He graduated from Monmouth College in 1934.

He served in the US Navy during WWII and was a Gunnery Officer on the SS Grayson, SS Robert Jordan and USS Abercrombie. He also served in the Naval Reserve Unit in Galesburg.

He was an electrician and owned and operated the former Bond Electric store in Abingdon with his father and later with his wife for 48 years retiring in July of 1973.

He was a member of Abingdon United Methodist Church, charter member of Abingdon Pottery Collectors Club and a member of Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post #381 in Abingdon.

He and his wife wintered in Brownsville, Texas since 1973.

He was a patient at Illinois State Veterans Home in Quincy since March of 2000. Cremation was accorded.

Graveside committal of the Cremains will be announced at a later date. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Chapel in Abingdon was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Illinois State Veterans Home in Quincy, Ill., or Abingdon United Methodist Church.
