The Oakley Graphic, June 17, 2009 (Edited)
Dorven "Fat" Beckman, 79. Grinnell, died on Friday, June 12, 2009, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, KS.

Dorven was born on November 29, 1929 at home in Mingo to Henry John and Gertrude Cecilia (Kruse) Beckman.

Fat grew up on a farm north of Oakley and graduated from high school in 1948. He was always very competitive and hated to lose at anything whether it was playing cards, racing his mare, or playing football for the Oakley Plainsmen.

On August 17, 1949, he married Rosemary C. Robben in Angelus. To this union six children were born: Judy, Wayne, Deanna, Dona Sue (deceased), Brian and Carol.

From 1955-1960, Fat and Rosie cash rented a farm near Seguin. In November of 1959, they bought the Grinnell Locker and moved to Grinnell. It was after that, Fat became known as Grinnell's "Crazy Butcher!"

He was a member ob the Immaculate Conception Church, Grinnell, and a 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus, Oakley Council 2866. Over the years he served as mayor of Grinnell, a city councilman, a school board member and also served on the Kansas Meat Processors Association Board of Directors for several years.

In the 1960's, he started his dream of owning farmland and began farming in western Logan County. He was always eager to get the big brown bus ready for a farm tour for anyone who was willing to go. He never got tired of looking at the growing crops.

Loading up the bus for Christmas caroling, trips to many a ball game, or hunting were some of Fat's big enjoyments. He loved any opportunity to get everybody together for a good time. He could often be seen square dancing or dancing a polka. He loved to dance just to see how high he could swing his partner. He enjoyed bowling and playing cards, especially his early morning pitch games with his buddies. He got a big kick out of hearing a new joke or seeing someone's reaction when he told them his jokes, no matter how old the jokes were.

Fat loved his community, spending time with friends, and looked forward to seeing his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. All will sadly miss him.

Survivors include his wife Rosemary of the home; sons Wayne and Jolene Beckman, and Brian and Dawn Beckman; daughters Judy and Randy Ostmeyer, Deanna Beckman, Carol and Todd; sisters Delores Herdt, Rosalee and Richard Pinkston, Pat and Bob Carpenter; 13 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents; a daughter, Dona Sue Beckman (infant); brothers: Bert Beckman and Willard Dean Beckman (infant); sisters: Velma Wolf and Luetta Baalman.

A Funeral Mass was said at the Immaculate Conception Church, Grinnell, today, Wednesday, June 17, 2009, at 10 am with Fr. John Lager officiating. Burial was in the Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Grinnell.
