John was born December 10, 1966, in Cedar Falls, Iowa, the son of Michael T. and Carla G. (Scharf) Phalen. He graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1986 and the University of Northern Iowa in 1993. On October 11, 1986, he was united in marriage to Stephanie Curtis and enlisted in the United States Marine Corp. where he was stationed at Camp Lejeune, NC. He was deployed to Okinawa, Korea, and also served aboard the USS Guam. He served in the National Guard from 1990 to present. He was activated twice this year for support in Operation Iraqi Freedom and most recently deployed to South Korea where he participated in exercise, "Ulchi Focus Lens." He was employed with Allied Insurance since 1995 as a Claims Manager.
John is survived by his wife, Stephanie of West Des Moines; twin daughters, Kayla and Lauren, at home; parents, Michael and Carla Phalen of Cedar Falls; and brother, Patrick of Scottsdale, AZ.
John died October 25, 2003. He was preceded in death by his grandparents.
