Ernest John Garcia died at his home in Greenwood on Dec. 27, 2007 of natural causes. He was 95 years old.
Born in New York City on June 9, 1912, he was the son of Joseph Carmen Garcia and Amelia Hernandez Garcia and the great-great-grandson of Francisco de Santander, the president of New Granada, the South American territory that would become Columbia.
Mr. Garcia made his career with the New Jersey Port Authority as an expert in loading and unloading intercontinental shipments. During World War II he was instrumental in shipping US Government military equipment overseas for use in Europe. He was a longtime member of the International Longshoremen's Association. He was also an avid builder and collector of model trains.
Mr. Garcia is survived by his wife of 69 years, Maria Cardillo Garcia, his sister, Gloria Garcia Guzman of Bogotá, Columbia; his four children, Lea Garcia McCallum of Greenwood, SC, Josephine Garcia Royle of Vermont, Ernest Mathew Garcia of Connecticut, William John Garcia, MD of Virginia and many adoring grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers and three sisters.
A Mass of Christian Burial was conducted at noon, Monday, Dec. 31, 2007 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery.
