German Ace jet fighter pilot. He operated over the Russian Eastern Front and amassed 255 downings of Russian aircraft. Major Nowotny was placed in charge of the fledgling 1st squadron comprised of newly developed jet fighters. In the closing days of the war, suffering the same fate of most Nazi ace pilots, he was killed when his jet fighter crashed near Achmer, Germany. Only a few parts of his body were recoved and identification was made by his main decoration found at the scene, "The Knight's Cross." The remains were buried in the family plot at Zentralfriedhof Cemetery located in Vienna, Austria
