Major Nowotny was placed in charge of the fledgling 1st squadron comprised of newly developed jet fighters. Only a few parts of his body were recoved and identification was made by his main decoration found at the scene, "The Knight's Cross." The remains were buried in the family plot at Zentralfriedhof Cemetery located in Vienna, Austria
