Henry Robert "Remps" Cockrell was born 1826 in Greene County, Alabama, the 7th of 9 known surviving children born to John C. Cockrell, Jr. and his wife, Tempy Baker, who had removed to Alabama from Nash County, NC, with many other families who traveled from the same area.

Remps married in Greene Co, AL in about 1846 to Eliza Ellender Strickland, daughter of Warren G. Strickland and Malinda Chamblee. He was about 20 at the nuptials, and she about age 16. The couple farmed in Greene County where they had the first 5 of their 10 children, before removing to Texas in before the Civil War. Children included:

Please note, by the time the family settled in Texas, the spelling of the family name had changed to COCKERELL; and that is the spelling under which most of the family is buried.

Henry's reasons for removing to Texas are not known, but he was accompanied by other family members includng his sister Lavinia Cockrell (1814-abt 1856) who had married Thomas Driver; Anna Cockrell (1865-1946) who had married Nathan Richardson (1814-1894); and Isabella Elizabeth Cockrell (1830-1871) who married Isham Chamblee.

Henry Robert Cockrell/Cockerell died in 1883 at just about one month shy of his 57th birthday. His wife of some 37 years survived him 23 years, passing in 1906 at age 75.
