Architect. In a career that spanned almost 60 years, he designed over 3000 projects. The "architect to the stars" created homes for celebrities such as Anthony Quinn, Bert Lahr, Danny Thomas, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Frank Sinatra, and Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. He also designed, either completely or in part, the following buildings in Los Angeles: the Shrine Auditorium, Hollywood YMCA, Sunset Plaza Apartments, a unit of L.A. General Hospital, and the L.A. County Court House. In the late 1940s he redesigned the Beverly Hills Hotel, including the famed Polo Lounge, and is responsible for its now-trademark colors of pink and green. He contributed to the "space ship" building in the middle of Los Angeles International Airport and designed the United Nations Building in Paris. He was the first African American architect to become the president of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and received the NAACP's Springarn Medal for Outstanding Achievement in 1953.
