World War I Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Lance Corporal in the 1st Battalion, Devonshire Regiment, British Army. On August 22, 1918, Lance Corporal Onions with a comrade were sent out to get in touch with the battalion on the right flank at Achiet-le-Petit, France. Seeing the enemy advancing in large numbers, Lance Corporal Onions placed himself and his comrade on the flank of the enemy and opened fire. When the Germans were about 100 yards from him the line wavered with some starting to surrender. He rushed forward and helped by his comrade, took about 200 of the enemy prisoners and marched them back to his company commander. For most prestigious gallantry, he was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal and later achieved the rank of Major.
