Ray Detmering was born to George Detmering and Adah Ora Lowe Detmering on June 12, 1893 near Fontana, Kansas. He had two younger siblings: Earl Christopher Detmering, born 8/2/1895; and Ora Ada Detmering, born 3/1/1898

On February 8, 1918, Ray married Gertrude Irene Helm in Illinois. In 1920, they had their first child, Bobbie, but a year later on July 31st, with a knife, Ray killed his son, Bobbie, attempted to kill his wife (but she survived), and then killed himself. Ray and Bobbie were buried on August 2nd in Riverview Cemetery in Streator, Illinois.

Before this tragic incident, Gertrude had become pregnant with another child, Marcella, who was born on March 24, 1922. She later married John Edward Wright. Marcella and John are also buried in Riverview Cemetery.
