Charles Sumner Bean was the fifth child of Dr. John Norton Bean and Abigail Ellis White Bean. He was born in Bedford, Taylor County, Iowa. Dec 01, 1865. He married Esther Ellen Peck, daughter of Martin Luther Peck and Melissa Jane Shipley in 1886. Charles worked for his father in law as a merchant in Florence Nebraska, and as a farmer.
Charles' and Esther's first five children were born in Omaha, Nebraska, between 1888 and 1894.
In 1900 Charles was working as a teamster in Omaha City. Later that year Charles and his family moved to Sonoma County, California. Their youngest son, Frank, was born there in Sonoma county, California in 1904. Charles homesteaded property along the Petaluma and Santa Rosa Railroad. He and his eldest son Paul worked the land and developed commercial gravenstein orchards and vineyards.
