U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. Born the grandson of John Hanson the 9th President of the Continental Congress, he graduated from St. John’s College, in 1802, studied law, admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Annapolis, Maryland. He established and edited the Federal Republican newspaper and was a member Maryland State House of Delegates, (1811-15). In 1813, he was elected as a Federalist to the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Congresses, serving until his resignation in 1816. He was elected as a Federalist to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Robert G. Harper in 1816 and served until his death at age 33.
