Alger John Oeffling, 83, of Johnsburg, died Monday, Sept. 7, 2009, at Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington.

He was born March 14, 1926, in Johnsburg to George Sr. and Martha (Huff) Oeffling. On June 5, 1948, he married Lucille E. Timm at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Crystal Lake.

A lifetime resident of Johnsburg, he worked for Joseph Frett & Son as a cement finisher for 37 years. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Johnsburg, and a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters Court 96. He was a longtime member of the Johnsburg Community Club and also served as groundskeeper and building superintendent until 2007. For 10 years, he was a member of the Johnsburg Rescue Squad and also served for a time as chief. An avid Cubs fan, he was active as a coach in the Little League in Johnsburg. In 1990, he was the parade marshal for the Johnsburg's Saufen Und Spiel. Most importantly, his fondest memories throughout his lifetime were times of family gatherings.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Lucille; six children, Diane (Randall) Rautmann of Sheboygan, Wis., Susan (Robin) Bowling of Round Lake Beach, John Oeffling of Lake in the Hills, Michael Oeffling of Johnsburg, Allan (Cassie) Oeffling of Glendale, Ariz., and Tammy (Ron) Lovell of Cedar Grove, Tenn.; 14 grandchildren, Scott (Amie) Rautmann of Portland, Ore., Christopher (Rachel) Rautmann of Saukville, Wis., Jennifer (Andy) Littmann of Sheboygan, Steve (Colleen) Huska of Tonica, Vicky (Perry) Huska of Kenosha, Nicole Bowling of Round Lake Beach, Penny (Denver) Owens of Russellville, Mo., Paul (Sarah) Oeffling of Richmond, Danny Freeland and Noah Oeffling, both of Glendale, Dayna Lovell of Johnsburg, Amy Lovell of Milan, Tenn., and Tanya Lovell and Sean Lovell, both of Cedar Grove; 14 great-grandchildren; two sisters and a brother, Doris (Bud) Schabow of McHenry, Frank (Donna) Oeffling of Exeland, Wis., and Bonnie Kuechel of McHenry; a sister-in-law, Sarah Oeffling of McHenry; a brother-in-law, Tom Fowler of Twin Lakes, Wis.; and a special friend of the family, Doug Webster.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, George Oeffling; a sister, Arlene Fowler; and a brother, Jim (Helen) Oeffling.

The visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, at Justen Funeral Home & Crematory, 3700 W. Charles J. Miller Road, McHenry. The visitation will resume from 9 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Johnsburg, until the funeral Mass is celebrated at 10 a.m., with interment after in St. John the Baptist Cemetery, Johnsburg.
