Pioneer Methodist Preacher, Politician. Son of Peter, Sr., a Revolutionary War soldier. Began preaching in 1803 and was regularly received into the ministry of the Methodist Episcopal Church when only 18 years old. Moving to Illinois because against slavery, in 1828 was elected to the Illinois Legislature and again in 1832. A Democrat all his live he was an uncomprising antagonist of slavery. Was a zealous supporter of the government during the civil war. In 1846 a candidate for Congress on the Democratic ticket but was defeated by Abraham Lincoln. A powerful preacher for over fifty years served as a Presiding Elder of the church. Cartwright Township was named after Rev. Peter in Sangamon Co., Illinois. A liberty ship U.S.S. Peter Cartwright named after him, many churches including one in Pleasant Plains, Illinois. Admired by Andrew Jackson, Abraham Lincoln, who served as lawyer for Rev. Peter's grandson, during a murder trial and other famous personalities of the time. Several books written by him and about him. Written up in most encyclopedias and books regarding the Methodist religion. Altogether he recruited over 10,000 members for the church, baptized 8,000 children and 4,000 adults. Brought religion to most all southern states and across to Ohio and Illinois. He did it all by horseback.
