Ada Emma Dearing was born in Jacksonville, Illinois in 1875 to John Dearing and Mary Parkin. Ada spent the first ten years of her life living in the Jacksonville, Illinois area. She traveled by train while her older family members traveled by wagon to Kansas. The family lived in a dugout in the Richland, Kansas area. The Dearings had problems living in this condition. Other family members moved back to Illinois while the Dearing family moved to the Salida, Colorado area. Ada received some schooling in Illinois and Colorado. Ada married first James McQuay in 1896 and secondly James C. Payne in 1902. Ada had two children by her first husband and seven by her second husband. Ada's family lived in Florence, Colorado where her husband James Payne worked as a fruit farmer in 1910. James Payne worked as a Pumper for Oil Wells in 1920 through 1930. She died at the age of 68 from inflammation of the kidneys. She also had chronic nephritis.
