Cartoonist. He began his career at Walt Disney Studios as an animator contributor for the "Pinocchio" and "Fantasia' films in 1936. In the early 1940s, he started series of comic books based on fairy tales and nursery rhymes for Dell Comics. It was during this period, he created his most noted character "Pogo", which went to press in 1943. Dell run a successful series of "Pogo" ending after 16 issues in 1950. "Pogo" first appeared as a comic strip in the New York Star on October 4, 1948 and has been syndicated to newspapers ever since. The individual strips have also been collected into at least 20 books edited by Kelly. He is a member of Jack Kirby Hall of Fame, Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame, plus a recipient of the Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year Award and Rueben Award. He died from diabetes at age 60.
