Charles was born in Ballyhupahaun, Queens County, Ireland and died in Severance Hospital in Seoul Korea.

Charles migrated to the US on the SS Umbria from Queenstown, Ireland landing 23 April 1888 with one suitcase. His father had died in 1880 and his mother in 1886,his oldest brother got the farm and his other brother married an older widow who had a farm. Charles made a home in Paterson, NJ. He was educated at Union Missionary Training School at Pennington Seminary and at Drew Theological Seminary. He was a minister attached to the Newark Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church when appointed to missionary service in 1900 to Pyeng Yang Korea. He married Louise Ogilvy, the first teacher of the American Missionary children in Pyeng Yang on 10 Sep 1903 in Kobe, Japan. They spent until 1916 in Pyeng Yang and Yeng Byen, where his two daughters were born, Charlotte and Muriel. After furlough they were assigned to Wonju in 1917 where Charles was superintendent of the Wonju and Yichun districts of the Korea Conference, supervising seventy-five Sunday schools with more than 3000 pupils, and seventy churches with 2000 members.
