"Revolutionary War Ancestor Frederick Beard was born September 30th, 1758 in Fredrick County, Maryland and enlisted into service at Frederick, Maryland on June 1, 1776. He served with Captain Phillip Maroney's of the Maryland Flying Camp. Frederick Beard fought at the battle of White Plains, New York and garrisoned Fort Washington serving six months. In 1777, he had served two months as a substitute for Henry Firor names of officers and men he served with are unknown. In the spring of 1781, Frederick Beard volunteered and served in Captain Valentine Creager's company and marched to Gerogetown and Washington to Annapolis, Maryland where he remained until the surrender of Yorktown in 1783. He was married in Frederick to Magdalena Weigle on December 2, 1783. Magdalena Weigle was born in 1763.

After the Revolutionary War in 1786, Frederick Beard settled in the newly founded town of Emmitsburg and was one of the first seven founding members. He lived at Emmitsburg for several years and moved to Adams County, Pennsylvania in what would become Fountaindale. At 76 years old he was allowed his pension of $30 annually from March 4, 1831 on his application and was executed on November 26, 1833.

Frederick Beard died on March 9th, 1842 aged 83 years, 5 months and 9 days. Frederick Beard was buried at Emmitsburg, Maryland. Magdalena Beard in 1848 was allowed to keep her husband's pension while at 85 years of age and residing in Adams County at Fountaindale.

Frederick and Magdalena Beard had 12 children and their names are recorded at the Apples Church near Thurmont Maryland. The following children are:

State of Pennsylvania, Adams County Crt.

On this 26th day of November 1833, personally appeared in open court and before the County Court of Adams, State of Pennsylvania, now sitting, Frederick Beard, a resident of the County of Adams and State aforesaid, aged 76-years, about the 1st day of November 1833, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed, June 7, 1832.

That he was born in Frederick County, Maryland, about 76-years ago on the 1st of November 1757, last past; kept no record of his age; that he resided between forty-and-fifty-years in the County of Frederick and the residence in Adams County; that he enlisted in Fredericktown, Maryland, in the Flying Camp for six-months, on or about June 1, 1776 under Captain Philip Maroney. Elisha Beale was first lieutenant; second lieutenant was William Beatty; ensign was one Solomon. Started from Fredericktown through Taneytown, thence to Hanover, to York, Lancaster, Philadelphia, to Newton, to Brunswick, to Amboy, to New York; remained here sometime, thence to Hellgate; remained here at Fort Washington for about three-months (headquarters; at Fort Washington we had an engagement with the British; several killed and wounded; from the Fort we moved on to White Plains where we had another engagement under General Smallwood; thence moved on toward Connecticut; thence recrossed the north lines and encamped at Fort Lee. The six-months for which affiant had been enlisted expired at Fore Lee, as he thinks. The troops were then taken to Philadelphia where affiant was with others paid off and discharged, so that he served out full six-months from the time of his enlistment. His written discharge which he received in Philadelphia is long since lost. Affiant was in Annapolis, Maryland, in October 1781, when Cornwallis surrendered. He was drafted in the spring of 1781 to go to Georgetown, now in the District of Columbia, under Captain Valentine Creager where he remained for sometime. About August 1781 was sent with some others to Annapolis, under one Sergeant Lowry, by order of Philip Thomas; remained there doing duty until surrender of Cornwallis, when he was discharged; lost the discharge; sometime afterward sent down to Annapolis and got my wages; he thinks $20.00 in all; returned home to Frederick County and resided at Emmitsburg several years and then removed to Pennsylvania.

He knows of no person whose testimony he can readily procure to prove his services, except that hereto approved, marked A. He hereby relinquishes any claim whatever to a pension or annuity, except the present, and declares that his name is not on the pension role of the agency of any state, and knows of no clergyman who can testify for him, as required by law.

Notice is Hereby Given, to the Heirs and Legal Representatives of Frederick Beard.

Late of Liberty Township, Adams County, deceased, to wit:--Mary Magdalena Beard, and issue as follows, to wit: Jacob, John, Frederick, George, Samuel, Polly, intermarried with Robert Linn, Catharine intermarried with Henry Reese, Margaret intermarried with John McIntire, Magdalena intermarried with John Karr, Elizabeth who was intermarried with Christopher Seitz, and who both died before the death of the said Intestate, leaving issue Joshua Seitz, Ersatus Seitz, Jeremiah Seitz. Hetty Maria intermarried with Barney Devine,--Joshua Beard, who also died before Intestate, leaving issue, Obed Montreville, Napoleon A., Athabiah B., and Malinda, all of whom are yet in their minority, and the three last have for their guardian, Isaac Weagly,--and David Beard, who also died before Intestate, leaving issue, Adeline Louisa, Mary Jane and John, all whom are yet in their minority, and having for their guardian Joseph Baugher.---

AN INQUEST will be held on FRIDAY, the 24th of Mon. next, on a certain Tract of Land, partly in Hamiltonban and partly in Liberty Townships, in the county of Adams aforesaid containing about six hundred acres more or less, with the appurtenances, adjoining land of John McIntire, Alexander Garden, John Zollinger, and others, to make partition thereof to and amongst the heirs and legal representatives of the said deceased, if the same will admit of such partition without prejudice to or spoiling the whole thereof but if the same will not admit of such partition, then to part and divide the same to and among as many of them as the same will conveniently accommodate; but if the same will not admit of division at all without prejudice to a spoiling the whole, then to value and appraise the same whole as undivided; and further to enquire and ascertain whether the said Real Estate will conveniently accommodate more than one of the children of the said Intestate, and if so how many of the said children it will conveniently accommodate.
