William Fredrick Toal was just 22 months old when his mother Elizabeth died a terrible death in October of 1881, then his father died 11 years later. According to several articles found in the Marysville Daily Appeal, one on July 20, 1900 stated in Superior Court the matter of the estate and guardianship of Fred Toal was the final account, report of Dr S J S Rogers, guardian, was filed and May 5, 1901, stated Fred Toal was assigned guardian-ship to his brother, Loyd Toal due to Fred being incompetent to handle his estate. At one time in the early 1900's the brother Loyd owned the Cliff House at the foot of the Feather river bridge, Fifth Street.
