Henry came to California in 1856, he served with the Marysville Police Department for many years before he was elected as Sheriff of Yuba County. At the time of his death he was serving his 4th term.
Hank and his wife Minnie had two sons, George Wheeler McCoy ( 1876-1912 ) born in Marysville, Sgt Co 8th Reg, Cal US Vol Infantry, and Charles J McCoy ( 1874 - 1952 ) born in Marysville, served with the Marysville Police like his dad and was also the Yuba County Sheriff for many terms.
In the words of Stephen G Hust ,"This is my own, my native land,"Hank was six feet two, 215 pounds of man who went after his man and brought him back dead or alive. He was the most efficient peace officer in Northern California, Great sheriffs they say are born, not made. He was the father of sheriff Charles McCoy, a worthy son of worthy father.
