Clarence M. Lockrem, 89, Harvey, ND, died Tuesday, May 11, 2010 at Trinity Medical Center, Minot, ND.

Funeral services will be Friday at 1:00 p.m. at First Lutheran Church, Harvey, ND. Visitation will be Thursday from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey.

Clarence was born on June 14, 1920 in Harvey, ND. He was the son of Ole and Martha (Heggen) Lockrem. They lived on a farm near Selz and later moved to Harvey where he attended school.

He enlisted in the 164th Infantry Antitank Company in Harvey on January 15, 1941. Clarence was in Company A and received orders to ship out on December 8, 1941. This was the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor. They soon arrived in New Caledonia where they became a part of the Americal Division. They were attached to a Marine outfit and found themselves in the battle at Guadalcanal. He also served in the Northern Solomons and the Southern Philippines. He received the Combat Infantryman Badge and his unit was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation. He was honorably discharged on July 14, 1945 and returned to Harvey.

Clarence and Pearl Krosbakken were united in marriage on December 7, 1945 in Harvey. They resided in Harvey until moving to Martin in 1955. He owned and operated Lockrem's Service Station and Grocery Store in Martin for many years. They retired and moved to Harvey in 1986.

Clarence enjoyed making chocolate chip cookies and pancakes. He also enjoyed bowling, fishing, and playing cards. His greatest joy was spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Clarence was a member of the First Lutheran Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, Wells Eagles Aerie #3080, all of Harvey and the Harvey Senior Citizens where he worked as a custodian for 15 years.

Clarence is survived by his wife of 64 years, Pearl of Harvey; son, Terry (Nancy) Lockrem of Minot; Cheryl (Jerry) Kaplan, Minnetonka, MN, Diane (Kim) Raugust of Goodrich, DeNae Lockrem of Harvey; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother, Raymond of Salinas, CA; sister, Esther Schuh of St. Cloud, MN; numerous nieces and nephews.

Clarence was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Lloyd, George and Noble; sisters, Olga Lade and Marie Sylvia.
