Columbus joined the Confederate Army in Mar 1863 when he was 18 years and 3 months old. His records show he served in Co. D, 5th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry until 31 May 1866 when he was paroled at Columbus, Mississippi.

On 02 Apr 1866, the United States had declared that a state of peace then existed with Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.

While the Civil War is most often said to have effectively ended with Gen. Lee's surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia at Appomatox Court House near noon on 09 Apr 1865, some fighting continued after that. President Andrew Johnson formally declared the end of the war on 20 Aug 1866.
