Mary Janes father died at the age of 45. Her mother couldn't raise eight children alone, so she farmed them out. Mary Jane was sent to live with her sister Matilda Sanders Clinkenbeard. While living there she became pregnant, by William Henry Clinkenbeard, Matilda's husband.
Mary Jane'a son John Sanders was born June 2, 1870 in Shell Knov, Missouri. He was 4 years of age when Mary Jane married Jacob McKnight, on September 13, 1874
Jacob moved his family quite often, when John was 10 yrs old they lived in Clay, Texas. In 1885 they were back in Missouri. In 1888 they were in Arkansas.
The family has no clue why Mary Jane is buried in Okla. or why she was in the area. She could not read or write. Beverly Sanders Bottorff has documentation where she tried to get a pension when Jacob died, she signed her name with an X.
