Frank A. Homan first came to Fresno in 1883. He operated a sporting goods store for many years under the name of Homan and Company from 1903 to 1957. He was the Mayor of Fresno from 1937 to 1941, served on the Fresno City Board of Education for many years, and was its president from 1909 to 1913.

Mr. Homan graduated from Fresno High School and as a student was active in student government and active in sports, playing on his school tennis and baseball teams. Later he played semi-pro baseball. In his early days he served as a reporter on the Fresno Republican before going into business.

Homan was extremely active in a host of civic, church and lodge groups in Fresno. He was honored by many of these groups for his untiring devotion to the welfare of his fellow Fresnans.

He married Estelle Chance, sister of Frank Chance of "Tinkers to Evers to Chance" fame, and his former teammate on the Fresno Expositer semi-pro team out of Fresno on January 3rd, 1900.

Because of Homan's many contributions to his community and to education, he received the distinguished service award from University of California, Fresno and also an Honorary Master of Public Service Degree.

Homan Elementary School in Fresno was named in his honor. The school opened to serve pupils living in that area in 1952.

Frank Homan was indeed a dedicated citizen of Fresno, seeking his welfare throughout his life.
