U.S. Congressman. Moving to Ohio in 1844, he taught in the academy at Tallmadge, Ohio, studied law, graduated from the Cincinnati Law School in 1845, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Akron, Ohio, in 1846. He was prosecuting attorney of Summit County, (1852-56) and a delegate to the first Republican National Convention in 1856. In 1859, he was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-sixth and Thirty-seventh Congresses, serving until 1863. During this time he also served as a Colonel in the Ohio Squirrel Hunters during the Civil War. Also in 1863, President Abraham Lincoln appointed him United States judge for the Territory of Idaho and he served as the first Governor of Montana Territory, (1865-66). After returning to Ohio, he practiced law until his death at age 81.
